My favorite book by David Shannon is A Bad Case of Stripes. In the book, a little girl named “Camilla” loves lima beans. She is afraid her friends might think she is strange for liking the beans, so she refuses to eat them. This craving that she has for lima beans turns her into all sorts of amazing things. Before she is cured, the colors on her skin change, she sprouts roots and even has feathers! Camilla would love this Lima Bean Succotash.
Think about how silly it would be for you to transform and make a self portrait using nature to show how it might look.
Nature Self Portrait
You will need:
Paper
Crayons or markers
Glue
Leaves, grass, twigs (things you can collect on a walk outside or in your backyard!)
After collecting some small things from outside, on a piece of paper make an outline of your head. Then using glue create a face with the items that you have gathered! Maybe grass for hair, acorns for eyes and a leaf for a smile! When the glue has dried you can add more details with crayons or markers to complete your picture!
Lima Bean Succotash
1 16oz. Package of frozen lima beans
¼ cup water
2 T. vegan butter
1 16oz. can whole kernel corn
1 4oz. can chopped green chilies
2 T. diced pimentos
salt and pepper to taste
1-2 T. Italian flat leaf parsley
In a large saucepan over medium hight heat, add the frozen lima leans with ¼ cup water. Once the beans have thawed, drain the corn and add it to the pan. Reduce the heat to low and add the rest of the ingredients. Add salt and pepper to your taste and simmer for about 5-10 minutes. I like to chop some fresh parsley to dress it up before serving. Enjoy!
